Stolen signalling cables cause severe train disruption across Essex

Stolen signalling cables have halted train services across Essex this morning.

Trains running through Shenfield have been affected by the theft, Greater Anglia reported.

The train operator said services running through the station could be cancelled or revised, as disruptions are expected to continue until further notice.

In a statement, the operator said: "Network Rail advised us of a loss of signalling in the Shenfield area, which has been caused by theft of the signalling cables.

"British Transport Police and Network Rail response teams are in the area and full rectification of the signals is ongoing.

"Network Rail engineers have made temporary repairs to the signalling system and trains are now able to run between Shenfield and London Liverpool Street.

"However, there will be a limited service running to/from Liverpool Street whilst work is being carried out and the signals are rectified."

The incident is affecting services between London Liverpool Street and Clacton, Ipswich, Hockley and Southend Victoria, as well as Intercity services to Norwich.
