Dorset has its fair share of picturesque towns and villages that are perfect for a weekend away, whether you're looking to relax in a cosy cottage or be out all day on hour long hikes with breath taking views. But one market town in particular has been named as one of the best in the country.

In a national survey seeking out the best towns and villages across the UK, Dorchester has been praised for its beautiful scenery and bustling high street, making it a perfect place to spend the week in.

In a Which survey of 9,000 people, Dorchester received an overall destination score of 67 per cent, that considered food and drink, peace and quiet and access to tourist attractions and shopping.

In terms of culture hotspots, Maumbury Rings is always a popular choice among tourists and locals. The henge dates back nearly 5,000 years to the neolithic period and was used as an amphitheatre during the roman period.

Other favourites include the charming grounds of Hardy's Cottage, which is just a short drive away, and Dorset Museum and Art Gallery, that explores 500,000 years of history.

The market also scored 3/5 for peace and quiet, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing getaway, as well as for overall attractiveness and food and drink.

It also scored 4/5 for shopping facilities and scenery.

The town was highlighted as a top spot in the UK, beating Matlock Bath, Bodmin and Castle Douglas.

The Borough Gardens is another top pick where people enjoy picnics, playing tennis or walking around the scenic grounds.

And within a few minutes' walk of anywhere in the town you'll find quiet river walks and pretty meadows.

The town is also committed to upkeeping its historic roots and still runs a market every Wednesday where more than 200 traders turn out weekly selling local delights from home grown fruit and vegetables, clothing and plants.

With its historic buildings, significant figures and scenic walks surrounding the town, Dorchester has a lot to offer to both tourists and residents alike.
