Two assistant sub inspectors (ASI) of police from Mohammad Bazar Police Station in Birbhum district have been suspended for allegedly collecting bribes from truck drivers.

On 23 September, the Mohammad Bazar police seized two sand-loaded

trucks and placed the case in the district court. Though the court directed the release

of the trucks, the accused ASIs allegedly sought Rs.70,000 to

release the vehicles.

Anas Ahmed, the trucks' owner, claimed he had valid papers for sand

transportation, but the police wrongfully intercepted and seized them. He had also

lodged a complaint with Birbhum superintendent of police Amandeep, also mentioning that he at one time had 26 trucks, but had to bring down his fleet to three owing to such police atrocities.

The Truck and Trippers' Association had also alleged that overloaded sand trucks from Jharkhand were being allowed to ply

through the area after the police took bribes from them. This was causing hardships to genuine sand and stone loaded trucks from Birbhum district.

ASI Saiful Islam and ASI Kiron Modal were suspended by SP Amandeep and confined to Birbhum

Police Lines. The role of the officer-in-charge of Mohammad Bazar Police Station, SI Prosenjit Ghosh, is also under

scanner, police sources said.

Anas Ahmed, who is also president of the truckers' association, said its members were being regularly harassed on

the roads. Besides lodging complaints with the DM and SP, the association had also approached the Birbhum District TMC and the Birbhum Zilla Parishad, seeking help.
