Officials are still investigating the cause of Thursday's industrial-area fire in Kalama, but the city has released more details. Cowlitz County Fire District 5 Chief Vic Leatzow said the blaze produced heavy smoke, making it appear more severe than it was. The fire burned about 5 acres near Kalama Chemical in a marshy riparian area, which helped slow its spread. Many residents received "Be Ready" evacuation notices before the fire was contained by 4:50 p.m. Thursday. Leatzow said DNR crews remained on scene through the weekend to monitor flare-ups before declaring the fire out.
