Sean Rueter has been thinking too much about pro wrestling since at least WrestleMania I, and blogging about it for SBNation & Cageside Seats since around WrestleMania 28.
The PPV portion of AEW's Mar. 9 Revolution PPV in Los Angeles kicked off with the grudge match between two of the company's most successful originals -- Hangman Page and Maxwell Jacob Friedman.
Fitting with their feud to this point, MJF initially entered to Page's old theme before Hangman stalked to the ring, all business.
Early on, Page seemed to have scouted Friedman well, but got increasingly frustrated when he couldn't put the Scumbag away. That frustration led him to slam his elbow into the steel steps attempting to drive Max into them. That allowed MJF to lock in his Salt of the Earth armbar, but the Cowboy got a boot on the bottom rope.
That led to this insane sequence that ended with Friedman spiking Page headfirst onto a steel chair.
Hanger barely broke the count, a move that seemed to break MJF. He broke down crying about the fans accepting Page and not him, a theme from the overall program. Max went for his Heatseeker DDT, but Hangman reversed it to hit Angel's Wings... and MJF landed straight on his face.
A Buckshot Lariat later, and Hangman pinned MJF.
Interesting outcome for what seemed like it could be the first match of a longer program. Will it still be? We'll find out. In the meantime, get complete results from Revolution and coverage of the entire show here.
