Deputies investigating shooting that injured tow truck driver

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) - Deputies in Berkeley County are investigating after a man was shot at several times while attempting to repossess a vehicle.

Authorities responded to the Sphinx gas station on Highway 78 in Ladson after receiving reports of a gunshot victim, according to a Berkeley County Sheriff's Office incident report.

The responding deputy found the victim with a belt wrapped around his right and an apparent gunshot wound. After receiving aid, the victim explained they went to a home on Curly Lane to repossess a vehicle.

The victim had the vehicle hooked up and was about to leave the property when a "Black male in his early 20s, wearing all black with dreads in a bun on top of his head," walked outside and told the victim he needed to leave because they were on private property.

The man saw the vehicle hooked up to the tow truck and then began firing, according to the victim's statement. One of the bullets hit the tow truck driver in the arm.

Deputies also located several bullet holes on the tow truck, including in the front and back windshields, driver-side tire and rim, and the truck's flatbed.

When the man started shooting, the driver dropped the vehicle and drove directly to the gas station so he could call for help.

This is an ongoing investigation. According to Carli Carr, spokesperson for the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, no arrests have been made at this time.
