Munich multi-hyphenate Polygonia delivers a house-leaning mix in her own idiosyncratic style for the Recognise series, and speaks to Claire Francis about weaving genres together in her productions and DJ sets, her enthusiasm for intuitive tech, and her mission to make the audio world more accessible through her DSP Dealer software company
Multifaceted doesn't quite cut it when describing Polygonia. A visual artist, producer, DJ, live performer, label owner, educator, software designer, and collaborator across multiple disciplines, the Munich-based creator has a uniquely kaleidoscopic sound, and a mind to match. Her productions - from the mystical techno of last year's 'Da Nao Tian Gong' EP on Midgar, to the stunning amalgam of genres on her latest album 'Dream Horizons' - are dense with detail: organic, precise, and emotionally fluid.
Speaking to DJ Mag from the US, midway through a busy tour, she talks about her numerous new projects, which span the creation of a new audio analysis suite, a collaborative EP, and an upcoming label showcase, while exuding the calm clarity of someone who thrives on productivity. One highlight of this trip was the Communion Sundays party in Minneapolis. "It's the Intellephunk crew, who also do the Great Beyond festival," she says. "I love the gigs where I can just explore all kinds of genres, which I did there. Honestly, I rarely see parties where people really move and jump and dance like this. They definitely know how to do it."
The tour also included a stop at Endzeit x Parameter Weekender in Oakland. "Everybody was so into it and so open for all kinds of stuff. I played through bass music, techno, housey stuff, trancey stuff, breakbeat, electro, everything."
Though she initially turned heads with her deep, psychedelic, and elegant take on techno, Polygonia frequently finds herself being drawn to this cross-genre approach. In a way, this ability to shapeshift throughout her sets mirrors the way she functions creatively. But behind that spontaneity lies a deeply organised and intuitive process.
