'Write the cheque': AFL urged to pursue rock legends for Grand Final entertainment

With the Foo Fighters confirmed for an Asian tour this October, calls have grown louder for AFL boss Andrew Dillon to make a bold play to secure the American rock giants for the 2025 Grand Final at the MCG.

The Grammy-winning band, fronted by Nirvana legend Dave Grohl, is set to perform in Jakarta on Thursday, 2 October, just five days after the Grand Final is scheduled in Melbourne.

With tour stops in Singapore and Japan also on the cards, the band's proximity has fuelled excitement that they could light up the biggest day on the AFL calendar.

"Foo Fighters, AFL Grand Final entertainment, yes, or no?" asked SEN broadcaster Dwayne Russell on Dwayne's World. "It would be a big act to put on pre-game; it would be awesome."

Russell didn't hold back in urging Dillon to act quickly, pointing to the band's tight schedule.

"They are here in Asia... it's a five- or six-hour flight from Melbourne to Jakarta, so it's a pretty easy one to come down here for our Grand Final and go, bang. Should Andrew Dillon write the cheque and get it done now?"

The AFL has form when it comes to bringing in global names for its Grand Final entertainment, with Katy Perry, KISS and Robbie Williams all having taken centre stage in recent years.

Foo Fighters, with 15 Grammys and timeless hits like Everlong, may just be the next to join that list.
