Jonathan Majors' Shelved Sports Drama Gets Release Date

Jonathan Majors' Shelved Sports Drama Gets Release Date

Disgraced MCU actor Jonathan Majors continues to slowly return to Hollywood, with the critically acclaimed drama Magazine Dreams , which Majors leads, having now been given a release date. The sports drama, which finds Majors starring as a troubled man looking after his ailing grandfather while trying to make it in the world of professional bodybuilding, will now be released in theaters on March 21, 2025, courtesy of Briarcliff Entertainment. Writer and director Elijah Bynum released a statement (via Deadline) alongside the release date, in which he thanked Briarcliff Entertainment for releasing the movie and for supporting the rest of the cast and crew who worked so hard.

"Dozens of incredibly talented people poured their time, energy and creativity into bringing this film to life, and I am immensely proud of their work. I'm grateful to Tom Ortenberg and Briarcliff Entertainment for their unwavering support, passion, and for giving this film the opportunity to reach a wider audience."

The sports drama, which follows Majors as an intensely troubled aspiring bodybuilder named Killian Maddox, had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival back in January 2023. Following its debut, the movie was met with a hugely positive response, with critics heaping praise on Majors' performance and confident that the actor would get a lot of Oscar buzz.

Jonathan Majors Received Rave Reviews for 'Magazine Dreams' Out of Sundance Close

The movie currently stands at an impressive 82% on Rotten Tomatoes with 95 reviews. Leah Greenblatt of Entertainment Weekly gave the movie an A- at the time, saying, "Even as the pacing falters, Majors is impossible to look away from: a man who desperately needs the world to see him -- and if they refuse, to feel his pain." Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com, meanwhile, declared that "no other actor could have pulled this off," and "people will be talking about this performance all year," while Valerie Complex of Deadline sums things up by simply saying, "Jonathan Majors is a revelation."

Of course, this all came to an end after Majors was accused, and has since been found guilty of, assault and harassment. These much-publicized accusations and the following trial resulted in Majors, who had seen his star rise rapidly after roles in the likes of Lovecraft Country and Creed 3, losing out on his highest profile role to date, that of the villainous Kang the Conqueror and his multitude of variants in the MCU. The character was intended to be the main villain for the rest of the franchise's multiverse arc, but the actor found himself fired by the studio following the verdicts. Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. has since been brought back into the fray to take over bad guy duties as Doctor Doom.

Magazine Dreams is produced by Jennifer Fox, Dan Gilroy, Jeffrey Soros, and Simon Horsman, with executive producers including Majors himself for his Tall Street Productions, and Luke Rodgers and Andrew Blau for Los Angeles Media Fund. The rest of the cast includes Haley Bennett, Taylour Paige, Mike O'Hearn, Harrison Page, and Harriet Sansom Harris.
