New Mexican grocery store brings authentic flavors to Winona

A new Mexican grocery store gives Winonans the opportunity to buy authentic Mexican foods without leaving town, and an opportunity to grab a meal while they shop.

Juan Bacilio recently opened La Palma Mexican Store and Food Trailer on Fifth Street after recognizing the city lacked a Mexican grocery store.

Bacilio realized people were traveling to Arcadia or Rochester to find products often sold at Mexican grocery stores.

"We decided try to open the store, see how it goes," Bacilio said. He said that when he first came to Winona, he never thought of opening a grocery store, but decided to as a last-minute idea.

Now, Winona residents can get authentic Mexican grocery and household items within the city limits.

Bacilio hopes to expand what he's able to sell at the store, including some meat options currently not in stock.

He said one of the store's most popular items is its bread.

People are also visiting the food truck parked outside the store to get a bite to eat. It offers options such as tacos, burritos, tortas and more.

It's not a new experience for Bacilio to offer Mexican cuisine in the area. He formerly owned a restaurant in Arcadia called El Texano and now operates El Barco restaurant in Rushford.
