Grand Island officials respond to gas leak; nearby homes safe

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Grand Island Fire and Rescue responded to a gas leak near 13th Street and Webb Boulevard Wednesday afternoon.

Northwestern Energy notified GIFD around 3:54 p.m. about the leak, according to Battalion Chief Justin Ferris. He said a construction crew installing a fiber line accidentally hit a gas line.

Ferris said the main concern was the storm sewer, which showed elevated gas readings, raising fears the gas could enter the sanitary sewer system and potentially affect nearby homes. Fortunately, officials confirmed no gas was detected inside any houses.

As a precaution, authorities shut down traffic on 13th Street between State Street and Webb Boulevard for several hours.

Crews installed two new valves and plan on replacing approximately 300 feet of damaged gas line to address the leak.

No evacuations were ordered, though one house near the leak voluntarily left the area. One nearby residence was without gas service, but officials expect it to be restored by Friday.
