CHICAGO -- Chicago's "You Name A Snowplow" contest is back for a third year.

Tens of thousands of Chicagoans have previously suggested and voted for possible snowplow names, like Sir Melts A Lot, Taylor Drift, Chillinois and Oh Snow You Didn't!

After two years of top-notch names, Chicagoans will have to up their pun game this season.

The two-phase contest kicks off with name submissions, which are limited to one per person and must not exceed 50 characters in length. Names can be submitted online through Jan. 4, or whenever the contest reaches 20,000 submissions, according to a news release from the city.

The Department of Streets and Sanitation will plow through the names to choose 50 finalists, and then narrow those down to six.

For the second phase Jan. 10-21, neighbors can cast their vote for the top six names.

Signage displaying the winning names will be installed on the snowplows in each of Chicago's six snow districts, and residents who came up with the names will win "city swag" and a photo opportunity with their snowplow, according to the city.

One of last year's winners was Skilling It, an homage to Chicago's beloved and now-retired weatherman Tom Skilling. Other winners included CTRL-SALT-DELETE, Casimir Plowaski, Ernie Snowbanks, Mies van der Snow and Bad, Bad Leroy Plow.

The inaugural winners were Mrs. O'Leary's Plow, Da Plow, Salter Payton, Sears Plower, Sleet Home Chicago, Holy Plow! and Jean Baptiste Point du Shovel. Because of a near-tie for sixth place, the city dedicated a seventh plow that year to the people.

The Department of Streets and Sanitation has a fleet of over 300 salt spreaders to manage more than 9,400 miles of roadway, according to the city.
