The Newstalk star, 65, said it definitely made him think about what was important to him in life
Broadcaster Tom Dunne has revealed doctors told him he could drop dead at any minute after they discovered a malformed heart valve.
The Something Happens frontman is the latest guest on Brendan Courtney's Keys To My Life on RTE One tonight where he will take viewers back to 1970's Drimnagh.
He told host Brendan: "I got a phone call to go in and see the surgeon, so it was quite heavy now, he said you had a 70% chance of dying within the next two years.
"It just stops opening and then you're dead. There's no warning about it. So basically, they open you up and replace the damaged aorta with a pig valve. It's like a miracle. If I had been born 20 or 30 years earlier, it wouldn't have happened."
The Newstalk star, 65, said it definitely made him think about what was important to him in life.
He added: "I think I knew what was important going in. I love my life, I really do. So I didn't want to change things afterwards.
"I just wanted to have more of it. I love music. I love my family and love everything. Just wanted more of that please. I certainly enjoy every moment. Yeah, I think the most searing thing I came to was holding Skye's hand.
"Skye at the time was about eight or so, and she's just a beautiful girl. And I just think, 'Oh, this is so precious'. I kind of think about those things a lot now. I think I think life is full of those precious little moments. You're holding somebody's hand. It's worth the weight in gold."
Tom also breaks down as he opens up about "the tortuous path" he and his wife Audrey went through trying to conceive their two children, Skye and Eva.
He added: "There was a tortuous path to that.... there was IVF and there were times were we thought is this ever going to happen? We were just getting knocked back. It seemed a lot.
"It goes so easy for so many people, and it's so difficult for so many others so when we became pregnant, that was like the greatest day ever. We still got it and got our award, and now she's 18."
Keys To My Life airs on RTE One and RTE Player at 8.30pm tonight.
