Bob Odenkirk Talks About the Possibility of Reprising His Role in 'Better Call Saul'

Bob Odenkirk Talks About the Possibility of Reprising His Role in 'Better Call Saul'

Although these days he's seen wielding guns instead of spewing out legal jargon, Bob Odenkirk says that if he had to reprise his role as Saul Goodman (or Jimmy McGill, whatever you prefer), of Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad fame, he would do it in a heartbeat. The character is one of many in Vince Gilligan's drama who became an icon, and even had his own very successful spin-off. Odenkirk has moved on since the show ended, but he doesn't immediately shut down the idea of returning to play Goodman, at least one more time.

The actor is currently promoting his latest film, the action sequel Nobody 2, in which he reprises the role of Hutch Mansell. Mansell is the family man who was once a mercenary, and his past constantly comes back to haunt him. While talking to Today.com, the actor was asked about possibly returning to the world created by Gilligan, and which some consider among the best dramas ever made. His answer shouldn't surprise you:

"Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould created that show. There are some of the best writers who ever worked on TV. So, if they were to think of something in that world, of course I would do it.

"But I don't think so. I think they've all moved on to some more amazing projects that you'll soon see. Look forward to the best written show on TV for years to come."

'Better Call Saul' Was Bob Odenkirk's Much-Overdue Breakout

As Odenkirk says, they've all moved on to better things. Not only did he make the jump towards action hero greatness, but his creative team in the show is also trying to do stuff outside the Breaking Bad spectrum. We don't see Saul Goodman returning to his shady adventures any time soon. However, if he were to, Odenkirk says that the show would have to take place in prison:

"He's not getting out (of prison). If there's another Saul show, it takes place inside prison.

"That part turned my life around, and I've given more to that part than anything I've done."

In any case, Odenkirk told The Hollywood Reporter a few days ago that, while he recognizes the legacy of Goodman and what it has meant for him and his career, he doesn't exactly miss the character of the sketchy attorney. He seems open to reprising the role of Nobody's Hutch Mansell again, nonetheless:

"He was great, and I enjoyed playing him. Both Hutch Mansell in Nobody and Saul Goodman in Better Call Saul have a lot of impacted frustration inside them. They're guys who, for different reasons, have pretty big chips on their shoulders, and that's hard to play after a while. You can't just carry that guy around all the time. So I'm fine with moving on from them both, although I would do more Hutch. I would do a third or fourth [Nobody] film.

"It would be about the journey of the family and the tensions that change as you move from one chapter to the next. You tell yourself, 'This is going to be it now. I'm going to enjoy this chapter of my life, and I'm going to be carefree.'"
