Mountain View Fire Rescue personnel investigate Monday grass fires near Erie

Mountain View Fire Rescue personnel are investigating the cause of a series of grass fires near Colo. 52 that happened just before 2:30 p.m. Monday, according to MVFR spokesman Rick Tillery.

The grass fires created a large amount of smoke on the north side of Colo. 52 just west of County Line Road, north of Erie, according to a Mountain View Fire Rescue Facebook post.

Around the same time, crews were notified that a small SUV had caught fire on Colo. 52 just west of the grass fires. Firefighters helped the driver, who received minor burns to his hands, and extinguished the flames. The car was a total loss, according to the department.

The driver told first responders that an ember from one of the grass fires flew into his SUV. Some of the material in the front seat caught fire, he said. He was taken to the hospital to receive treatment for minor burns, according to the department.
