It wasn't enough that the Chicago Cubs got swept by the middling San Francisco Giants, or that fans in Chicago saw their hated rivals in Green Bay acquire one of the NFL's top players. Former North Sider Kyle Schwarber had to twist the dagger just a bit more in historic fashion Thursday night.
Schwarber hit four homers in the Philadelphia Phillies' lopsided win over the Atlanta Braves at Citizens Bank Park. He became the third player to accomplish this feat in 2025 and the 21st in MLB history. This performance gives him a new career-high in homers (49) and puts him on the brink of reaching 50. It also raised his wRC+ on the season to 159 and RBI total to 119. While the WAR numbers don't look great because of his lack of defense, his offense alone should have him in MVP talks.
He had plenty of memorable moments as a Cub, but that power ceiling that many in Chicago dreamed of really materialized in Philadelphia. He's hit 180 home runs as a Philly in 599 regular season games, plus an additional 12 for them in the postseason. He hits free agency this winter, and how that plays out will be one of the top storylines of the offseason.
The hindsight of letting him go has been talked and debated about ad nauseam. Regardless, nothing can be done now. It just adds insult to injury for the Chicago faithful, as the team has struggled to find sustainable power and offense for an extended period of time. A few months back, it would not have stung as much with the way the Cubs offense was rolling.
Good for Schwarber either way. He should always be remembered fondly in Chicago and his heorics will always be part of Cubs history. It would just be nice if the Cubs bats could find some thunder again, and the Bears don't make their fans sad and miserable. Is that too much to ask?
