After a talent-packed 23rd season, America has crowned Jamal Roberts as the next "American Idol."
The 27-year-old P.E. teacher from Meridian, Mississippi clinched the title during Sunday's season finale, where he faced off against fellow finalists Breanna Nix and John Foster.
Host Ryan Seacrest said that this year's finale brought in over 26 million votes -- more than double the amount of last year's final episode, and the show's biggest finale vote since it began airing on ABC in 2018.
Roberts secured the win with performances of "First Time" by TEEKS and "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" by The Temptations. Later in the episode, the soon-to-be champion also shared a rendition of his new single "Heal" (a cover of Tom Odell's original song).
As votes from "Idol" fans poured in during the first hour of the finale, host Ryan Seacrest revealed Nix as the season's second runner-up. Viewers continued to vote throughout the finale's remaining two hours, which featured guest appearances from Patti LaBelle, Salt-N-Pepa, Goo Goo Dolls and Jessica Simpson, among others.
Roberts and Foster provided the last two performances of the evening, with Roberts singing "Heal" and Foster sharing another rendition of his original song "Tell That Angel I Love Her," which he performed during this season's Top 20 round.
But it was Roberts who was ultimately victorious. Immediately after Seacrest revealed the results, Roberts put his hands over his face in disbelief, then launched into a performance of "Her Heart" by Anthony Hamilton.
