Hurricane Melissa Live: Category four storm stronger than Katrina makes landfall in Jamaica

The World Meteorological Organization says the Caribbean island nation faces a 'catastrophic situation' in the coming hours.

Roads are caving in, trees are being uprooted, and there are reports of people being electrocuted with live powerlines in flooded areas of Jamaica . Robian Williams is a journalist at Nationwide90FM and is in the Jamaica n capital Kingston.

She told ABC NewsRadio's Rhiannon Elston that the western part of Jamaica has been hardest hit. 'We're being told of people being electrocuted by live wires in water,' she said. 'It is just really scary, most of the western parishes, Westmoreland, St Elizabeth, they're being pounded. 'It's just insane.' Making everything worse are connectivity issues for people trying to call loved ones, as well as severe obstacles for first responders. 'They're actually braving this weather, trying to save lives and trying to just keep themselves safe,' Robian Williams said. 'Jamaica has, of course, seen hurricanes before, but this one we're hearing is on an unprecedented scale. 'It's really devastating.'
