Unbeaten Caldy maintain brilliant start with win over Cambridge

CALDY secured another five point victory at home against bottom of the table Cambridge to remain second in the Championship.

On a day of changeable weather at Paton Field, it was Caldy who started the better of the two sides, scoring the first try from Ollie Hearn after six minutes converting after a pinpoint penalty.

Hearn was in again just after the quarter hour going over the line after great work from the lineout.

On loan, Sale Sharks winger Obi Eze showed his pace to burst down the wing to score the third at the midway point of the half and showed he has a very bright future in the game.

The four try bonus point was secured after Matt Killcourse scored in the corner after a great flowing move.

The visitors went over for their first try on the half hour mark before Will Robinson scored a fifth try of the half and the first of the season for the Scotland under 20 International.

A second try from Cambridge on the stroke of half time made the score look respectable.

The second half was a bit more of a level playing field with tries from both sides on at regular intervals.

Cambridge scored first just a minute after the restart and the thoughts of a comeback were on.

Caldy hit back almost immediately after Killcourse went over for his second of the afternoon.

Cambridge hit back again with another try to claim a bonus point and make those on the bank very nervous.

The final quarter of the game was very tight with the only scoring points coming from on loan Sale Sharks and Scottish International Ruben Logan as the match finished 41-24.

The Caldy supporters were in good spirits after the match and are very confident of a good season ahead with the target being to finish in the top six.

Next week Caldy take their unbeaten record to Cornish Pirates. The South West outfit won their first game of the season against London Scottish on Saturday.
