Tony Bloom says there is 'too much football' and it is 'one tournament too many'

Tony Bloom says there is too much football and the Club World Cup is a competition too many.

But he will have no complaints if the effects of both that and European football help Albion in the Premier League this season.

The chairman has made no secret of his - and the club's - hunger to back into UEFA competition.

Fans, players, staff and officials all loved their eight-game adventure in the Europa League, as well as the thrill of qualifying in the first place.

The aim is a repeat. But, in the meantime, Bloom hopes international commitments of others might catch up with them as the season progresses.

He told The Argus: "Not playing in Europe makes us even more motivated that we want to be there.

"There's nine clubs, a record nine, playing in Europe this season from the Premier League and there's probably going to be regularly seven or eight and we want to be part of it.

"So it should just make us more determined.

"But we've just got to really focus on the process. Work on things, as Fabian does, as all the players do, game to game.

"Each game is a huge battle - tactical battle and physical battle - and we've got to be ready for each and every game.

"If we do that, I think we can reach our goals at season.

"I think it's unprecedented how deep Man City and obviously Chelsea in particular played in the summer.

"Then they got to have a very short break and get ready.

"Who knows how that would affect them as the season progresses? And they are obviously playing in Europe as well.

"I think it has to have an effect.

"I think there's too much football. I think for me it's one tournament too many.

"And obviously the other teams are just playing in Europe.

"There's a lot more European nights, with the Champions League and Europa League league stages having eight games.

"So I think that has a cumulative effect and that gives those clubs not playing in Europe an advantage for the Premier League season, no doubt about it.

"Who knows? But definitely in terms of the Premier League results, you are obviously in a better position if you're not playing in Europe and midweek.

"We would like to be playing in Europe but, when we're not, yes, we do have an advantage for the Premier League season, compared to those teams which are playing in Europe."

Bloom is confident Albion will have another good Prem season.

And another factor which could help them over the remaining 31 games of the campaign is the adaptation of their summer arrivals.

The way they got all their signings on board before pre-season kicked off was unprecedented.

But getting them on the pitch is taking rather longer.

"Yes, they are two different things," Bloom said with a laugh.

But he added: "I'm not surprised. I'm not saying I was expecting one thing or another.

"My role is to bring in a squad of players that, come the end of the transfer window, is as strong as it possibly can be.

"And it's up to Fabian (Hurzeler, head coach) to decide week in, week out, based on what he sees in training and how they perform in games, who's going to be the 11 starters, who the subs are and which subs come on.

"I've brought in a head coach who I think is well-suited for Brighton and Hove Albion and well-suited to get the very best out of our players and to improve our players."
