Naval Academy midshipman, 20, found dead after being reported missing

A United States Naval Academy midshipman was found dead Friday after being reported missing by his family the evening prior.

Midshipman Second Class Kyle Philbert James, 20, of Whippany, New Jersey, was reported missing Thursday evening after his mother received a call from the Naval Academy informing her that her son had not attended any of his classes that day, according to WFSB 3.

His mother told WFSB 3 that she had spoken with James that morning through text messages, where he responded to her message telling her he loved her.

On Friday, Oct. 10 -- the following day -- academy officials contacted James' family to inform them that his remains had been found near the Naval Academy.

An email sent to Naval Academy families confirmed James' death and said the academy's Midshipmen Development Center and chaplain center will be reaching out to midshipmen.

In a statement from the Naval Academy posted by Report Annapolis News, the academy said James was a history major and participated in the academy's gospel choir and that the circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation.

Naval Academy officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Baltimore Sun.
