Yogurt maker Chobani is facing backlash online from some people after announcing a partnership with Planet Harvest, a company co-founded by Ivanka Trump, as social media users call for boycotts over ties to conservative politics.
Chobani unveiled the partnership on Sept. 12, saying it would work with Planet Harvest to source "imperfect" fruits and vegetables produce that is typically left in fields because it doesn't meet grocery store size or appearance standards. The Chicago-based company was launched in 2023 by Trump and Melissa Ackerman to connect farmers with food companies and reduce waste.
The announcement quickly drew criticism on Threads, where a post about the collaboration had nearly 500,000 views by Sept. 15. Many commenters expressed disappointment.
Chobani has been working with Planet Harvest since 2024, according to a CNBC interview with Trump and Chobani founder and CEO Hamdi Ulukaya. Trump said she first connected with Ulukaya during her father's presidency, when she learned how often crops were plowed under because of cosmetic imperfections. She said she called Ulukaya, and the two struck up a partnership that now supplies all of Chobani's strawberries, with plans to expand to other fruits.
For Trump, the announcement marked a return to the spotlight after largely stepping away from politics following her role as a senior adviser in her father's first term. She made a rare public appearance in May to promote Planet Harvest.
