ATLANTA, Ga. - Two months after he was hit by a car and airlifted to the hospital, a Georgia police officer is making strides in his recovery.
The department shared an update from Dustin Krish's sister-in-law, Jessica Krish. She said he has been declared "minimally conscious" and recently earned an 8 on his Coma Recovery Scale -- the highest score yet.
"We still have a very long road ahead of us, but God is answering our prayers in a big way," she wrote.
Dustin was struck by a car while directing traffic near the Ingles on Highway 27 on June 11. He was taken to Marietta's Wellstar Kennestone Regional Medical Center in serious condition and underwent two intensive surgeries.
Now, Dustin is in physical and speech therapy. He can wiggle his fingers and toes and recently reached out to hold his wife's hand unprompted.
"He is trying hard to communicate with us, I just know it," Jessica wrote. "I can't wait for the day I can tell you he said his first words!"
The police department and Dustin's loved ones are asking the public for prayers as he continues to heal.
The family has established a GoFundMe to help pay for Dustin's medical treatments.
According to the fundraiser, Dustin joined the Carrollton Police Department three years ago and just married his wife last November.
"He loves his job, and being a police officer is truly his calling. He is the kind of person who lights up every room, not just with jokes and laughter but with a heart that radiates warmth," the fundraiser said. "We don't know what the next few weeks, months, or even years will look like, but we trust in a God of miracles."
