Michigan State is revamping a popular pregame campus spot for the 2025 football season.
The university on Monday announced the introduction of "The Munn Tailgate," which will include the 517 Beer Garden, to go with parking and tailgating at the space across from Spartan Stadium.
"We're excited to introduce The Munn Tailgate as a pregame destination for Spartans of all ages," new Michigan State athletic director J Batt said in a press release. "Gameday traditions, including tailgating and the pregame experience, are an important part of what makes Michigan State football gamedays special. I'm confident The Munn Tailgate will quickly become a pregame tradition for many, providing food, drinks and fun for the entire family, and adding to the energy around Spartan Stadium."
Directly south of Munn Ice Arena, Munn Field has been a source of controversy over the years, including a student riot in 1998 after a ban on alcohol. Tailgating on the grass space was eliminated completely in 2018.
The new 517 Beer Garden, at the north end of Munn Field and open to all fans, will include multiple bars - serving beer, seltzer and craft cocktails - and a variety of food options. The fully cashless area will open four hours before kickoff with service ending 30 minutes before the start of games.
Those looking to park or tailgate at Munn Field will need a pass distributed by the athletic department with no general parking allowed. Lot opening times will mirror those of other general lots.
Michigan State, which posted a 5-7 record in coach Jonathan Smith's debut last year, opens the season on Friday (7 p.m., FS1) by hosting Western Michigan.
