Officials investigate inmate death in custody

A 46-year-old man was found dead in his cell on Friday evening at a Riverside County detention facility, prompting an ongoing investigation into the circumstances of his death.

Deputies discovered Ray Gonzalez of Jurupa Valley unresponsive in his housing unit at 6:54 p.m., according to authorities. Jail medical staff and responding paramedics attempted lifesaving measures, but Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators from the Sheriff's Office Corrections Central Investigations Bureau and the Coroner's Bureau have taken over the case.

Officials said there were no signs of foul play, and the death appears to be a suicide, though the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact Investigator Brett Devine at 951-922-7695.

The incident raises broader questions about safety and mental health support within detention facilities. While authorities have not released additional details about Gonzalez's time in custody, cases like this often reignite scrutiny of jail conditions and the resources available to inmates.
