EXCLUSIVE | For Abhishek Porel 'domestic cricket matters a lot' to make it to Indian team - Inside Sport India

Abhishek Porel has played three seasons of IPL, where he has scored 661 runs at an average of 25, with three fifties to his name.

It was in IPL 2024 that a certain Abhishek Porel burst on the scene with his powerful hitting for Delhi Capitals. That season he not only scored 327 runs, but also smashed two fifties, which raised hopes of an emerging talent from the league. But it kind of fizzled out in the 2025 season, where he could just score one fifty.

Yes, it was another 300-run season, but nothing earth-shattering. Yet, there is a lot of potential in Bengal skipper, and he knows it too. In fact, he not only dreams to have an excellent IPL season, but also make the cut for the Indian side, notwithstanding the format.

In an exclusive interview with InsideSport he went on to reveal, what his plan really is, to break into the Indian side. And he was clear that domestic cricket plays a substantial role in making the cut. He said, "To make it to the Indian team, domestic matters a lot. If you perform there, that is the confidence you carry in IPL."

"Like, the goal first is to perform in Ranji Trophy, then comes the T20s (Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy).. There is a different game-plan for different formats. It is a step-by-step process for me. For now, the planning is about the red ball, and when subsequently when the T20s come, the mindset will be different. That mindset will only give me a breakthrough season in the IPL."

Abhishek Porel also remained clear, that Test cricket is what he prefers, and that tops the list for him. T20s and ODIs is fine too, but playing Tests for India is the ultimate dream. "I want to play all formats for India, and wherever I get a chance.. playing Tests is a matter of great pride. I prefer red ball cricket; there is a different feeling about the format. So playing Tests for India is a priority."
