Swansea Council 'bitterly disappointed' with WRU decision and Tandy call made star's heart drop | Wales Online

These are your headlines on the evening of Saturday, October 25.

Swansea Council say they are "bitterly disappointed" by the WRU's announcement that there will be a reduction to the number of professional sides in Wales.

On Friday it was confirmed the WRU's proposal is to have a team in Cardiff, one in the east and one in west Wales in a huge shake-up to the game in this country.

Both the Ospreys and Scarlets released statements on Friday night responding to the news, with the clubs stating their cases for survival.

The Ospreys' move to their new home at St Helen's has been delayed by a season, with the club playing this campaign in Bridgend. Swansea Council granted planning permission to redevelop the historic ground in Swansea Bay during the summer, but yesterday's news will now raise questions over what happens next, with the Ospreys' future far from assured.

A Swansea Council spokesperson said: "We are bitterly disappointed by the WRU announcement.

"We are fully committed to retaining professional rugby in Swansea and will continue working with the Ospreys.

"We urge the WRU to reconsider their current proposals and back Wales's most successful regional sides."

The Ospreys' Friday night statement read: "Ospreys Rugby met with Malcolm Wall and Dave Reddin from the WRU this morning, where they laid out their plans for Welsh rugby.

"Ospreys are Wales' most successful region, having won more league titles, produced players who've won more Welsh caps and been selected for more British and Irish Lions tours than any other region.

"We will continue to engage with the WRU with the intention of reaching an agreement which continues that proud tradition. Our intention is and always has been to find a solution which works in the best interests of Welsh rugby and Ospreys Rugby, not only at an elite level but across the entirety of the game and the communities involved in it."

Meanwhile, Swansea West MP Torsten Bell and Swansea Council leader Rob Stewart have released a joint statement criticising the union's handling of the situation.

The WRU have "fallen well short" of showing respect to the game, the pair claim, stating understanding of rugby should extend beyond the borders of the capital city.

They ended by stating the plans were "not fit for purpose".

"Rugby is central to our communities, from the professional game right down to the grassroots," they wrote in a statement issued on Friday evening.

"It deserves respect from those responsible for overseeing it. The Welsh Rugby Union has fallen well short of showing that respect today.

"Respect would mean understanding that rugby matters west of Cardiff, not least in Swansea.

"Respect would mean ending the uncertainty facing clubs, fans and players - not setting up years more of it as they have done today.

"The WRU's plans are not fit for purpose, and if any members of the WRU board don't understand that, then neither are they."

Uncapped Dragons hooker Brodie Coghlan says his heart "absolutely dropped" when he received a call from Steve Tandy telling him he was in the Wales squad this autumn.

Coghlan is one of five uncapped players in Tandy's party for the upcoming series, which sees Wales face Argentina, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa next month.

Coghlan will line up against the Ospreys this evening still buzzing from the news - although he admits he thought it was a wind-up at first.

"Steve Tandy rang me the night before the announcement," he said.

"I wasn't expecting it. I was just sat down, I answered a phone call and he basically let me know.

"I wasn't sure if it was actually him! It came up as a number, but I obviously didn't have the contact saved, so I wasn't sure who it was.

"When he said his name, I paused for a second because I wasn't sure if it was one of my mates having me on!

"But then I thought 'Oh my God, this is actually him' and my heart absolutely dropped. I was shaking. I was really startled."
