Gophers Run Past Nebraska With Strong Performance In A Key College Matchup

I like to think I'm open to evolving while still honoring traditions, so with that said, I believe Friday nights are made for and should be reserved for high school football. The machine that is major college sports now, they see a window by trying to play a few games on Friday nights and are trying to monetize it. To that, I say, leave Friday nights alone.

This past week was MEA week for Minnesota students, and there was no high school football this past Friday. A lot of states don't have the MEA week that Minnesota students have. So, they still play on Friday nights, even if there's no school that day.

The Big Ten saw a great opportunity with the Minnesota Gophers set to host the Nebraska Cornhuskers, no high school football in Minnesota, meant Big Ten College Football under the Friday night lights. Only one of a few games in college football being played on Friday provided a juice to the Gophers fan base and a major opportunity for the Gophers team.

A lot of teams have opportunities during the season, but not many take advantage of those big-time chances. The Gophers did just that, holding a fairly explosive Nebraska offense to no touchdowns, and two first have field goals. Not to mention the 17 points Minnesota hung in the second half.

Coach PJ Fleck told Mike Grimm of the Gophers Radio Network in his pregame interview that he loved the game plan they had for both sides of the ball. The Gophers were able to do something they haven't really done all year, and that was running the football successfully.

186 rushing yards in total and 148 for Darius Taylor who finally broke out this season and shined like fans know he can. Taylor picked up 71 yards on one carry, which set up the only touchdown of the first half. The Gophers averaged 5.3 yards per carry, while the Minnesota defense only allowed Nebraska 1.2 yards each time they ran the football.

The Cornhuskers were averaging 41 points per game and didn't find the end zone. Combine that fact with barely one yard per carry, big kudos to the game plan that Coach Fleck loved so much, and that he and his staff put together.

Minnesota is one game from being bowl eligible and having some momentum building with their 2nd win in a row, and their 3rd win in the last four. But the challenge doesn't get any easier this week as they head to Iowa City to face the Iowa Hawkeyes. The winner of this one stays in a good position tied for second place in the league with still a lot of ball left to be played.
