Cornerback Jaylon Johnson is expected to miss time for the Chicago Bears indefinitely, according to NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport.
At 26 years old, Johnson has been dealing with a rough stretch, having missed all of training camp and the preseason due to a groin issue. He was also absent from the Bears' season opener against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1, but had his first chance in 2025 against the Detroit Lions in Week 2, leaving the game in the second quarter.
He made two tackles in that matchup, but a diving attempt to intercept a pass may have aggravated the injury. Following a new diagnosis, the Bears opted to place Johnson on injured reserve for four weeks, though the timeline could be longer.
However, Bears head coach Ben Johnson told reporters that the injury is not the same as the one from the offseason.
"It's a new injury, unrelated to what he had before," he said, via ESPN's Courtney Cronin.
Johnson may undergo surgery, which would sideline him for the remainder of the 2025-26 season. The two-time Pro Bowler was a second-round pick by Chicago in 2020 (50th overall) and, across six NFL seasons, has recorded 7 interceptions, 40 passes defended, 216 tackles, and 11 tackles for loss.
Johnson signed a four-year contract extension with the Bears prior to last season. The deal is worth $76 million, with $54.4 million guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $19 million, placing him among the 15 highest-paid cornerbacks in the league.
