The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on Nigerians to intensify efforts in preventing suicide, describing it as a public health concern that requires collective action, compassion and awareness.
Speaking in Dutse during activities marking the 2025 World Suicide Prevention Day, the Jigawa State Director of NOA, Malam Ahmad Ibrahim Tijjani, explained that suicide is the act of intentionally taking one's own life, often driven by multiple factors such as mental health challenges, trauma, social isolation, substance abuse, and chronic illness.
He noted that the theme for this year's observance, "Creating Hope Through Action", highlights the importance of proactive measures to promote hope, provide support to people facing mental health challenges, and reduce the rate of suicide globally.
"Every year, more than 720,000 lives are lost globally to suicide. Each of these deaths leaves behind families, friends and communities who are deeply affected. We must therefore work together to create awareness, break the stigma around mental health, and support those in need," Ibrahim stressed.
The Director urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, show empathy, and extend help to people showing signs of distress or hopelessness, emphasizing that suicide is preventable when timely interventions and support systems are provided.
He further encouraged families, religious leaders, schools, civil society organisations and the media to play active roles in spreading messages of hope and encouraging those battling mental health issues to seek professional help.
