Proposed West Ashley 700-home subdivision under review

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Construction on another West Ashley neighborhood might be starting soon, but not without some major improvements.

City leaders are set to vote on whether to move the development of the 700-home neighborhood forward into the preliminary stages or if they'll need to see more changes.

What is currently forest and wetlands will eventually become the Somersby subdivision, an offshoot of the Long Savannah development.

This proposed mixed-use development would include 704 units of both commercial and residential buildings spanning almost 300 acres.

There will be a variety of infrastructural elements as well as including multiple ponds surrounding the area along with two roundabouts to help traffic flow, according to the plans.

City leaders are also working on a referendum to help improve infrastructure in the area and working with state legislators to fund those improvements.

The Technical Review Committee meeting starts Thursday at 9 a.m.
