A 15-year-old teenager and two dogs were rescued from an abandoned well shaft on Saturday, according to the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District. Crews responded to the shaft near the 13000 block of La Barr Meadows Road just before 7 p.m.Officials said the teenager descended into the 15 to 20-foot deep shaft in an attempt to rescue their pets. But instead, they became stuck as well. The fire district said that after about an hour of maneuvering and a vertical rope rescue, the teenager and both dogs were brought to the surface. The teenager had no injuries, officials said. The dogs were treated for minor dehydration and are expected to make a full recovery. "This incident is a reminder of the importance of avoiding unsecured structures and calling for help immediately in emergencies," said Jason Robitaille, Fire Chief of the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District, in a statement. The public is urged to report any hazardous abandoned shafts to the fire district.
