The right-wing campaign to shut down perceived detractors of the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk reverberated through the entertainment industry after US TV network ABC announced it would indefinitely suspend late-night host Jimmy Kimmel. The news spurred an outcry and accusations that ABC had buckled to a censorship campaign targeting one of President Donald Trump's most vocal critics.
The network did not give an explanation for suspending Jimmy Kimmel Live! after the host delivered a monologue on Monday, accusing "the president and his henchmen" of trying to capitalise on Kirk's fatal shooting in Utah last week. But Trump and his allies have urged people to drum Kirk's perceived detractors out of their jobs in the aftermath of the activist's death.
