US: Beyond Meat shares soar on planned Walmart distribution

US: Brookshire Grocery to acquire 2 Louisiana Winn-Dixie stores
Brookshire Grocery Co. announced that it has signed a deal to purchase two Winn-Dixie stores in Louisiana's capital city and plans to rebrand the locations under the Super 1 Foods banner. Terms of the transactions were not disclosed. The Baton Rouge supermarkets are both set to close on November 16 and reopen later that week as Super 1 Foods stores.

Lidl GB pushes ahead with expansion as profit jumps
Lidl GB, the UK arm of the German discount supermarket chain, reported a near fourfold jump in profit for its 2024/25 year and said it would press ahead with expansion, including the opening of 40 new stores in its current year. Britain's sixth largest grocer said it made a pretax profit of 156.8mln pounds ($210.44mln) in the year to February 28 2025, versus a profit of 43.6mln pounds in 2023/24, driven by a 7.9% increase in revenue to 11.7bln pounds.

Ramaphosa's message to Shoprite, Pick n Pay and other retail giants in South Africa
President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged South Africa's grocery retailers to do more to bring down the cost of food in the country, and to steer clear of cartel behaviour. The president said the 'Big Five' retail companies - Shoprite, SPAR, Pick n Pay, Woolworths and Massmart - can and must play a far greater role in making nutritious food more affordable for South African households. "We acknowledge the efforts being made in this regard by a number of retailers to keep their prices as low as possible, as well as initiatives to keep daily essentials affordable", he said. However, as retailers grow their market share among low-income households, "they have a responsibility to ensure this includes affordable healthy food choices such as plant and animal proteins, fruits and vegetables", he said.

Tegut to close more supermarkets in Germany than initially planned
German supermarket chain Tegut, owned by Switzerland's Migros Group, is accelerating its restructuring plan - and will shut down more branches than originally announced. The decision marks the latest step in a difficult turnaround process after years of declining profits and shrinking margins. According to reports from the Lebensmittel Zeitung, Tegut now plans to close around 50 stores, instead of the 35 previously expected. This would amount to roughly one-sixth of its total 300 outlets across Germany.

Greenfood reported: "Greenfood maintained its strong momentum in the third quarter. Picadeli once again led growth, with net sales up 11.0%, while Food Solutions continued to gain traction, particularly in Denmark. During the period, Picadeli surpassed 300 salad bars in Finland, making it one of the country's largest fast-food chains by number of outlets, and signed a new three-year contract with TotalEnergies, one of Europe's leading service and fuel station operators. Net sales for the group totaled SEK 1,454.2mln (1,413.4), an increase of 2.9%, driven by 11.0% growth in Picadeli and 3.6% growth in Food Solutions while Fresh Produce decreased -2.7%".
