HURLING: It's about the journey

Captain when they last walked behind the Tulla Pipe Band, Fergal Lynch will man the sideline on Sunday as Clooney-Quin look to end an 83-year wait for Canon Hamilton glory. While winning is the obvious and ultimate goal, the 2013 All-Ireland winner is all about the journey, describing Canon Hamilton as the destination.

"Firstly, we are really looking forward to the occasion itself, and it's just great to be part of a County Final and all that goes with it. I'm the principal of the school here, and there's a great buzz around the place, and all the kids are coming to school every day with their hurley.

"They've been doing it anyway, but you can feel the extra excitement around the place. The GAA club in nearly every parish is the place where people want to be all the time. It's like the Church was forty or fifty years ago. It's the centre of the community where people meet and chat, and that culture of the GAA is nearly becoming our religion.

"It's great that we're able to celebrate being in a county final and enjoy it. Everybody deserves to get a taste of some form of success or some form of excitement on a journey to the destination.

"As a youngster I grew up looking at our club at the intermediate level, and we went and won that in 2006 and went on to win a Munster title against Bishopstown. We were very unfortunate not to get an All-Ireland club final.

"To win an Adult Championship with the club was one of the biggest highlights of my hurling career, but the journey we had together is what will stand to me.

Fergal has a similar viewpoint when looking back to the club's only other County Final appearance.

"We were so close in the drawn game, with the ball hitting the crossbar and going back out about forty-five yards, which I've never seen before or since and which often haunts me still, to be honest. We had some great players back then, and after beating Feakle, we went on a sort of cup run.
