Online applications for places at Lancashire County Council's primary and secondary schools from September 2026 are now live.
The authority is responsible for education in 12 boroughs including Ribble Valley, Hyndburn, Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale.
Parents and carers can now apply online for children who are either starting primary school or moving to secondary school in September 2026.
It is vital for them to submit a timely online application for their child's school place for next year, for the best chance of securing their preferred school.
The closing date for applications for primary school is January 15.
The closing date for applications for secondary schools is October 31.
Applications must be made even if children already have a brother or sister at the school, or if the primary is linked to the child's nursery.
The admissions criteria for schools are on their websites or available from their offices.
While all applications received up to the closing date are given equal priority, if parents or guardians miss the deadline, a late application may reduce their chance of getting their preferred school.
Lancashire County Council's education boss, County Cllr Matthew Salter, said: "It is vital that parents and guardians carefully consider the right school for their children and submit this choice as soon as they have decided.
"Apply as soon as you can to ensure the best chance of securing your preferred school.
"Our online application process is quick and easy, and the whole process should only take a few minutes.
"All parents and carers need to apply for their child's place as no-one will be automatically allocated a place.
"They can also look at how their child will get to school as part of the admissions process and check whether they qualify for travel assistance.
"If you need any support in making your application, our admissions team will be happy to help."
There is also support for families on low incomes.
Schools in Blackburn with Darwen are run by their borough council, a separate education authority.
